We are pleased to announce that proposals for participation in the next edition of our group photography exhibition series titled, Perspectives from Within (PFW), are now being accepted. PFW was established in 2016 as a platform for exhibiting works by an emergent generation of artists living and working on the African continent.
Images of Africa in the 21st century come with numerous stereotypes, either propagated by the media or from lack of information about African history and cultures. On one hand, Africa is typically depicted as a dark continent plagued with starvation, wars, scammers, and hopelessness. On the other hand, some simply have ‘Afrobeats’ or ‘Wakanda’ as the extent of their African knowledge. While this set of topics are worthy of attention, a narrow focus on such tropes have become foundational blocks for modern day ignorance, hatred, and racist attacks. Our aim with PFW is to push discussions on African cultures forward by presenting work that addresses a range of topics in ways that might help viewers better understand and appreciate the vastness of our continent.
This third edition of the PFW exhibition seeks to counter stereotypical narratives of the continent by exploring and celebrating Africa as told from insider perspectives. Selected artists will be expected to expand on critical questions such as: what shapes our visual narrative? what influences our lifestyles? and what are the unifying experiences that bind us as humans? We would be delighted to accept bodies of work that provide thought-provoking insight into such spheres of African life across the continent.
